I know Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has shown us his ally stripes in fighting terrorism since 9/11, but somehow I feel we should always watch our back when dealing with him. Granted, he has taken a lot of flack for his overt support of Bush's efforts to reign in bin Laden et al, and his efforts have most likely been on the up-and-up for the most part. But we have to wonder if he isn't truly looking out for his own political interests by not going full force to uncover al Qaeda on the Afghan/Pakistan border. This is, after all, a man who rose to power in Pakistan by a military coup..........so certainly the organized military in that country could do a better job in bringing the terrorists into the open. And.......this is also a man who, while espousing a desire for a democratic government in Pakistan, changed the constitution in 2004 which allowed him to remain in control without the power of the people's voice in the decision making.
For the most part, Musharraf has proved himself to be an ally in the war on terrorism, but I don't think we can assume that his motives are as pure as the driven snow. As President Bush has been saying repeatedly since 9/11, we need to remain VIGILANT...and that vigilance needs to refer to Pakistan and Musharraf as well.
